Have you ever wondered why... Vi siete mai chiesti perchè... Part I

Have you ever wondered why...

... men's clothes, mainly jackets, shirts and coats, have buttons on the right while women's are on the left?
It's easier for right-handed people - the majority - to push buttons on the right through holes on the left, and so men's buttons are on the right. When first used, buttons were expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Women in well-to-do families were usually dressed by servants. Since a maid would face the woman she was dressing, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right - the woman's left... and that is where they've remained.

...we cross our fingers for good luck?
Early Christians secretly made the sign of the cross this way to ask for divine assistance without attracting the attention of pagans.

... people clink glasses before a toast?
It was once thought that the devil was omnipresent at festive occasions but could be repelled by the sound of bells. The host and guests, therefore, would clink their glasses, producing bell-like sounds to scare him away.

... a bride stands always on the groom's left?
In days when men often captured their brides from neighbouring villages, a groom had to keep his sword hand - the right one - free during the ceremony to fend off a possible attack by the bride's kinsmen or jealous suitors.

... it's bad luck to walk under a ladder?
A ladder leaning against a wall forms a triangle, the symbol of the Trinity and the mystic number three. It was once believed that to walk through the triangle would be to defy the Trinity and risk divine wrath.

...croissants are crescent-shaped?
In 1683, Austrians repelled the Ottoman Turks' attempt to occupy Vienna. To commemorate the victory , Viennese bakers created the croissants, shaped like the crescent in the Turkish flag.

We are always ready to adopt new tendencies but some old ones are still going strong!

All' inizio i bottoni erano costosi, e li portavano sopratutto i ricchi.

Very interesting post Sue, some things we do are actually quite old customs, superstitions or beliefs and we think nothing of them...I still don't walk under a ladder mostly because I feel I should avoid whatever is up there and can fall on me! But who knows subconsciously what is going on in our little heads LOL!

Ciao Cinzia,

Grazie Sue, buona serata!

Great info. Thanks. I enjoyed it. I like the one about the crossing of the fingers for luck. Didn't know it was a Christian thing.

Interesting stuff. This shows us how much we take so many things for granted.

Wow, That is very interesting information. I didn't know the why of the buttons but always wondered. Doesn't it seem like men have the easy route, most of the time?
