Cherry stone thermal cushion

It's Cherry Time!
Cherries have a magical history - the Romans discovered sweet cherries in Asia Minor in about 70 BC and introduced them to Britain in the first century. Although the fruit has always been popular for dessert and culinary purposes, cherries were used during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries for their medicinal properties. Hot cherry stones were once used in bed-warming pans and Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" associates cherries with love and romance.
According to tradition, Swiss distillery workers, who understood the heat-retaining properties of cherry stones, would tie them in small bags, place them on the factory stoves and use them at the end of the day to treat stiff shoulders, sore backs and the general aches and pains of their toil.

Today cherry stone thermal cushions can be heated in a microwave oven for 3 minutes for a therapeutic hot pad or alternatively placed in the freezer to create an extremely effective cold compress for fuffy eyes and bruises.
Last year I saved all the cherry stones from my desserts (approx. 200 gr.) washed them well and dried them in the sun and when dry I put them away hoping to make one of these cushions someday and at last I finally got down to it... I found a pretty backstitch embroidery design to put on it and here's the result. So don't throw away those cherry stones ... they are useful to our health.

Well done on your stitching, your cushion is so lovely. Isn't it amazing how we can find uses for so many things we usually throw away.
Thanks sis,

Amber, I discovered these cushions last year, I didn't know about the therapeutic effects of cherry stones until a friend told me about them.

Doreen, yes it is really amazing how many things we throw away without knowing they can be useful in many other ways. You're surprised by the info? I made a good search this time LOL!

HUGS,
SUE

I did not know cherry stones could be used this way but I'll be saving them when I come across some cherries at the grocer. I love natural remedies anyway.
