An afternoon in the country

Just as the title suggests, yesterday, we spent the afternoon in the country. We don't often go visiting relatives because they live far from us but we decided to take the car and go visit my husband's uncle and family who live in the country.
It was a nice afternoon spent in good company and I enjoyed taking pictures even if the weather wasn't ideal for photo snapping, it was a little windy. My husband's uncle insisted on giving us some of the vegetables he grows and loaded us with potatoes, basil, egg plants, but best of all ... my favorite... CORN.
Needless to say, I had corn on the cob for dinner, it was ages since the last time I had eaten corn on the cob and I had nearly forgotten how wonderful it tastes.

What a lovely way to spend the day. I can just taste the melted butter on the corn, I have not had one of those in a while. Julie.C

Ok, I'm jealous.

I tried growing corn this year which is reportedly difficult in my part of Texas. And difficult it is because every ear of corn was attacked by some kind of caterpillar! I inspected the corn's progress every day after the seed went into the ground, dreaming of eating an ear of corn dripping in butter just like those in the photo you posted.

After the discovery of the infestation, I chopped the corn stalks down and tossed them over the fence for the cows. They did not mind that the corn was less than perfect. lol

Next year, I'll give it another try but with sunflowers planted in between -- sunflowers are supposedly a trap crop for the caterpillars. We'll see. :D

Fresh corn on the cob - yummy. And what a pleasure it must have been to spend and afternoon in the Italian countryside.

Dona
