Tired of a plain White Tank Top -- Stanca della semplice Canotta Bianca

I don't know if any of you,  like me,  get tired of the plain cotton tank tops in your summer wardrobe way before the summer season  is over?
I was looking for ways to embellish a plain white tank top when I came across this interesting site, well, interesting for those who like me want a cheap and easy way to spruce up their t-shirts and tops. I am sharing the link here if some of you are interested.
http://www.sheknows.com/living/articles/835499/4-easy-ways-to-embellish-a-plain-tank-topEven if I really like these redo's I think they may not always be suitable for all and since I am not so young  anymore I just could not dare so much, so  I embellished my tank top with some fake crystal buttons and fake gold studs. Not a drastic change. Not  bad... eh?

http://www.sheknows.com/living/articles/835499/4-easy-ways-to-embellish-a-plain-tank-top

How to make doll's curly hair using a Hairpin Loom

Making and attaching doll's hair has always been a difficult task for me . Lately I have been browsing the web for ideas on dolls' hair.  I want to make some doll angel heads with curly hair and I don't fancy sewing each single curl one by one onto  the head as I had  done before on my other fabric dolls.
I think I must have searched all over the web until I found something that attracted my attention. It was a site about a HAIRPIN LOOM ... this was new to me, it was all about Hairpin  Lace. I had never heard of this before but it interested me and so I set about making my own loom. I used the wire from a laundry clothes hanger and soon I had my own loom. After a few tries I finally managed to make what looked like a strand of evenly sized curls. This is certainly what I was looking for, it is easier to sew on top of the doll's head and the curls are approximately all of the same size. I did not follow the basic crochet instuctions as in the links below ( at the foot of this post)  but used my own method .

Here's my loom with my first attempt in making my angel's hair.
Close up on the yarn.
Un ingrandimento sulla lana.
The strand of curls when slipped off the loom.
  The same strand twisted.
La stessa ciocca attorcigliata su se stessa.

Here the strand is longer than the one in the previous picture
and is sewn over and covers the head (from ear to ear)

This really makes the work easier and faster. If you're interested to know more about Hairpin looms and Hairpin Lace here are some links:

Breakfast Placemat

I finally finished the project I had mentioned in a previous post ( 3 posts back).
Those who left a comment and said I was making a cat guessed right , it is a cat's head which I sewed onto a breakfast placemat I made ... it holds the napkin in place.
I used some leftover red cotton fabric and white bias edging for the mat as well as some white cotton fabric, from an old bed sheet, for the cat's head. The napkin in the picture is a paper napkin since I stopped using linen napkins long ago.
I love to recycle leftover fabric, there are loads of crafts I can do with it.
I made this for my daughter, she loves cats.

New work in progress - Nuovo lavoro in corso

I've taken up needle and thread once more. This is something I started before going to Malta but haven't finished yet... I will post the picture of the finished project as soon as it's completed.
Let's see how many of you will guess what I'm making this time. There's no prize for this but I am sure many will guess right.

Sock Owl !

My creative muse? Still missing in action but thanks to Internet I found something to do.
Owls... they seem to be very popular among creative bloggers so, I thought to myself , why not try to make one?
And try I did...

I used an old toddler's sock to make his body ( one of my son's old toddler socks) ... fabric yoyos and buttons for the eyes.
To add a tiny bit of colour I sewed on a lilac felt heart applique with pink button.

Dreaming ... Spring ! ---- Sognando la primavera !

I am really looking forward to Spring , I guess we all are after this cold, cold Winter.
This time of year always finds me so impatient... I am longing to take a walk without shivering and to open a window for fresh air to clear out the stale air of winter and to wake up to the tweeting birds outside the window. Yes the idea of tweeting birds inspired me to make this little blue bird , maybe it will help to bring in warmer days and sunshine.

Chicken Licken Pot Holder.

I think that many of my English followers still remember the fable of Chicken Licken... the little chick that got hit by a fallen acorn and thought that the sky was falling. The character of this tale inspired me to make a cute pot holder for my kitchen.
I had to give it a somewhat silly look since Chicken Licken was a silly little chick even if the result looks more like a hen.
I am enclosing the pattern for this potholder for those who would like to make one.
Download here.
The body is in white cotton fabric, the wattles and comb in red felt... I used quilter's batting for the inside.
Remember you must cut out the batting in the same shape too.

I embroidered the outline of the eyes and brows in a stem stitch using black embroidery thread and the pupils in satin stitch using the same black thread while the beak was done in a satin stitch with yellow embroidery thread, the wings are done in a lighter yellow in a stem stitch.
I sewed on the wattles and comb in a blanket stitch with red embroidery thread.
The embroidery should be done before the back and front parts are sewn together.
Below you can see a close up of the stitches I used.
On the back of the pot holder I sewed on a tiny plastic ring for hanging.

A stitch at a time!

As the saying goes, " slowly does it" ... that's exactly how my stitchery is proceeding these days....a stitch at a time . Here's my work in progress which I hope to finish shortly.

Cherry stone thermal cushion

It's Cherry Time!
Cherries have a magical history - the Romans discovered sweet cherries in Asia Minor in about 70 BC and introduced them to Britain in the first century. Although the fruit has always been popular for dessert and culinary purposes, cherries were used during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries for their medicinal properties. Hot cherry stones were once used in bed-warming pans and Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" associates cherries with love and romance.
According to tradition, Swiss distillery workers, who understood the heat-retaining properties of cherry stones, would tie them in small bags, place them on the factory stoves and use them at the end of the day to treat stiff shoulders, sore backs and the general aches and pains of their toil.

Today cherry stone thermal cushions can be heated in a microwave oven for 3 minutes for a therapeutic hot pad or alternatively placed in the freezer to create an extremely effective cold compress for fuffy eyes and bruises.
Last year I saved all the cherry stones from my desserts (approx. 200 gr.) washed them well and dried them in the sun and when dry I put them away hoping to make one of these cushions someday and at last I finally got down to it... I found a pretty backstitch embroidery design to put on it and here's the result. So don't throw away those cherry stones ... they are useful to our health.

Simple Handmade Birthday Gift.

My sister's birthday is getting closer and I have posted early this time. Her birthday is in a weeks time but I just couldn't wait anymore , I had to send my little handmade gift to her so I posted the packet on Monday and this morning she emailed me to thank and tell me it arrived already.
These are the simple handmade gifts I made especially for her, a sister wall banner and a lavender scented heart... I can post the pictures now.
