Sightseeing tour of Mantua -- Giro turistico di Mantova

After our boat trip on the river (see previous post)  we visited Mantua on foot.
This beautiful city was one of the greatest Renaissance Courts in Europe and home of the wealthy Gonzaga family, who rose from peasant origins to conquer the city in 1328 and ruled benevolently until 1707.
Where Florence had the Medicis, Mantua had the Gonzagas.
This town is also famous as being the setting of Romeo's exile in Shakespeares's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" and the scene of Verdi's  masterpiece the Rigoletto.
There is a great deal of information about this beautiful town on the web for anyone interested in visiting so I won't go through its history here but I will only share some of the pictures I took during our tour. I chose the ones that turned out best, there were many tourists and it's not easy to take pictures when persons keep getting in your way, unfortunately.

 Rigoletto

Inside the Cathedral / Al interno della Cattedrale

Rotonda di San Lorenzo

Inside the Rotonda di San Lorenzo ( there were wedding preperations)

I end this post with a picture of Mantua's special cake called Torta Sbrisolona, I just couldn't go back home without buying one of these cakes.

I took some more pictures, during this visit, that have nothing to do with the town's historical buildings but you can see these on my other blog here.

It looks like Mantova has made it's way onto the list of places I want to see in Italy.
