HOT CROSS BUNS

Hot cross buns! Hot cross buns!
One a penny two a penny - Hot cross buns
If you have no daughters, give them to your sons
One a penny two a penny - Hot cross buns

So goes a nursery rhyme inspired by cries of “Hot Cross Buns!” of English street vendors
when selling their wares.

*Filastrocca Inglese*

Easter is close and very soon we will be preparing those traditional sweets and cakes that accompany this Holy Day.
I miss the many traditional sweets and cakes that made part of my past Easters during my childhood days in Malta. The traditional Easter cakes and Easter eggs here in Italy are delicous but I miss those nice fragrant Hot Cross Buns which my mum would buy for us on Good Friday. These are current buns which are marked with a white cross on top (representing the cross on which Jesus died).
Hot Cross Buns have a mixed history. Some say they were spiced buns eaten at pagan spring festivals and later given the cross by monks wanting to give Christian meaning to the tradition.
There is also a sad story linked to these buns... that of an English widow, who's son went off to sea.
He was due to return home on Good Friday and asked his mother to bake some hot cross buns for him... this she did, but he never came back home.
She continued to bake a hot cross bun for him each year and hung it in the bakery window in good faith that he would some day return to her. The English people kept the tradition for her even after she passed away.
In the 1840's a pub was built where the widow's cottage used to stand and it was decided to name it
"The Widow's Son" so that he could recognise it if he ever came back.
Every year on Good Friday a ceremony takes place in this pub in memory of this widow and her son ... a Hot Cross Bun is baked specially and a sailor of the Royal Navy is invited to place it in a net above the bar where buns from previous years are kept.

Superstitions about hot cross buns:
One superstition says that buns baked and served on Good Friday will not stale or become mouldy during the subsequent year.
Another superstition says buns should be kept for medicinal purposes, a piece given to someone who is ill will help him to recover.

Superstizioni sugli Hot Cross Buns:
